Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii
In Hawaiian one of the meanings of this valley is "bay sprinkling food". In pre-contact times, its valley floor was terraced with rack walls and auwais (irrigation ditches) that diverted up-stream and allowed water to continue to flow through the taro patches and back to the stream. For a short time after post-contact, coffee was grown up the valley and these plants can be still seen growing wild with their red berries. |
